“Start with the end in mind.”

- Steven Covey

This quote is by Stephen Covey from his book ‘The Seven Habits of Highly Successful People.’

What Does It Mean?

Covey says that from the outset, we must be clear on what our outcome will be. In that way, our efforts are directed to our objective. That means that all our activities must contribute to our defined end.

The opposite of this is also true — if you have no defined aim and purpose, all manner of trivial tasks will seek to fill up your time. Then, no matter how much you say you want something, if it’s not backed up by action, you will never achieve your goal.

How Does This Relate to Authors?

For aspiring authors, what this means is when you begin writing, you must be crystal clear on your eventual outcome. And for most authors, that is completing your book. Getting to finish that last chapter. And you must know what you’re doing at every point is contributing to completing the writing of your book.

Writing a book is a marathon, not a sprint. You can’t simply dash off a book. You must know exactly what you’re aiming at, and pursue that goal every day. Having focus on this is the difference between success and failure.

Clarity for Authors

Having a clear sense of purpose in what you’re writing will help you succeed.

  • Having clarity of purpose is fundamental
  • It enhances your personal effectiveness
  • Your focus will deliver extraordinary results
  • Time spent on extraneous activities is time wasted

Let’s Put This Into Action

  • Decide what your outcome is, specifically
  • Get really clear on what this means
  • Decompose your final deliverable into chapters
  • Define the very next step
  • Get to work!
