How do you get your book to sell? You’re an author, right? Then I think I know something about you. Will you indulge me for a moment? I believe your overriding aim is to sell your book and to get your book into the hands of the people who need it most. That’s why most people write their book, isn’t it?

And there’s more. In the past, you’ve probably experienced failure with selling your book. Sure, there was an initial flurry of friends and family buying it, then nothing. Crickets. Tumbleweed.

Now you’re worried about missing out on getting your book to sell. You spent all that time writing it, didn’t you? Are you beginning to question whether it was worth it?

It’s NOT Your Fault!

You know what? The issue may not actually be you at all! Because writing your book and selling your book are two drastically different things. The shocking truth is that no-one tells you — even on expensive book coaching programmes exactly HOW you should sell your book!

They don’t even cover some simple activities that you could take right now to get your book selling.

So What’s The Problem?

The actual problem here is the belief a traditional publisher would promote your book for you. And nothing could be further from the truth! In fact, traditional publishers lack the skills to help you market your book. So don’t feel left out if you are self-published — as either way book promotion is all down to you.

It’s Not You

Here’s the bottom line: the issue is not if you’re not smart enough or lack the ability or will-power. The actual culprit here is the received wisdom that someone else will (or should) promote your book for you. Sure, there are people who will charge you $1,500 a month to do some cursory promotion for you. But scratch the surface and you’ll see these are book publishers with little marketing skill. And you’re better off without them.

But, the truth is, this isn’t a game stopper. That’s because it’s very possible, in fact quite simple to take some simple actions to promote your book, if you know how. The challenge is, book promotion is not a one-off activity. It needs a focus on a range of related marketing activities over time. And you have to choose activities that work in today’s market.

What Can I Do?

If you have a physical book, get into the habit of carrying your books around with you. This is particularly valuable if you visit a related conference. Network and you may find people interested in your book.

You could publish extracts of your book to your blog. Just make sure you have a link at the end back to your page on Amazon (assuming that’s where you published).

Make sure you complete your Amazon Central page — this is free promotion for you, and ensure all your books, a bio and an up to date picture are included.
