Get Your Book Published — Just Avoid These Common Problems!

Why don’t books sell? Easy. I’ve been publishing books for authors for years. I’ve seen all the mistakes authors make. And from what I’ve seen, there are four main reasons that books don’t sell! Want to know what they are?

1. There Is No Market

If you want to sell books, you need to pick a topic area where there is demand. If there is no demand then it doesn’t matter how good your book is — it will not sell. First-time authors often assume that just because they know and love a particular subject that everyone else does too.

Nothing could be further from the truth. So if you want your book to sell, you need to select a topic area where people already buy books. Ideally this is also an area you know about and can write a book on.

So once you've selected a topic where there is demand, what’s next? Next, put yourself in the position of your prospect. Assuming you’re not yet a famous author, what do your prospects have to go on?

The answer is your book cover and your book title. Let’s look at each of those, starting with the cover.

2. A Dreadful Book Cover

Your book cover has to look professional. And it has to look like it belongs in the genre that it’s in. If it looks cheap or out of place, your prospect won’t investigate further.

Don’t even think of designing your book cover yourself. And don’t get your mate to do it on the cheap, either.

Your book cover represents you and your unique content that you’ve developed and refined over many years. Don’t sell yourself short.

3. A Terrible Book Title

The same goes your book title. If you name your book so that it looks out of place with the best-sellers in your field, it will be ignored. And if you don’t use the most-used keywords in your field, it won’t even be found!

I frequently see authors trying to be witty and using in-jokes in their titles. This will only work if your target audience is in on the joke. My advice is to avoid this approach.

Your title and subtitle should give your prospective buyer a good idea what your book is about. Look at the best-sellers in your field to see how they are titled — and use a similar approach.

4. The Wrong Book Category

Assuming you sell on Amazon, whether or not your book sells is critically dependent on the book Categories you use. If you use the wrong ones, people searching in your field won’t find it! This is such a daft thing to get wrong, but I see it happening time and again.

All you have to do to avoid this problem is to spend a few minutes browsing Amazon to see in what Category your book best fits.

5. You Don’t Have a Book!

The four reasons above pale into insignificance if you don’t have a book in the first place. To have credibility and authority in your field, you must publish a book.

But I know, it just takes so long and is a lot of hassle! You know that and I know that. But it’s not your fault! It’s the fault of the overly-complicated book creation and publishing process.
